Penderyn distillery, based in the Brecon Beacons, Wales, is celebrating its fifth international Gold Award win this year. The distillery’s Penderyn Portwood has claimed Best in Class in its category at the Whiskies of The World Awards, offered each year to leading spirits from all over the globe.
Excelling in the Malt: Barrel Finished category, it is just the latest in a series of awards offered to the Welsh brand, and the latest in a long line of big successes for the all-female distillery team based in Brecon.
This award arrives ahead of Penderyn Portwood’s debut in the US. This latest success for the distillery continues to put the proudly Welsh firm on the global map, with their popular malts and expressions appealing to whisky enthusiasts and awards judges.
Penderyn also celebrated its first £1 million Operating revenue in 2019, as it heads towards it’s 20th anniversary in 2020.
The Penderyn brand was also honoured with three Gold awards at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in August, where Portwood picked up another Gold – alongside Rich Oak, a staple of the Penderyn line-up and a Portwood Single Cask. Penderyn also picked up a Gold for Sherrywood at the very prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Awards. Portwood’s success at the Whiskies of the World Awards is a great achievement. The ceremony is closely watched by spirit industry experts and will be certain to open up the Brecon brand to a whole new market.
‘We’re all so thrilled that Portwood is continuing to get the recognition it deserves,’ Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn, reveals. ‘It’s one of our very favourite blends, and it’s so exciting to see that our malts are continuing to turn heads, and taste buds, on a global scale.’
‘2019 has been a fantastic year for Penderyn. We’re launching Portwood in America very soon, which means we’ll be opening up the line to a whole new audience of drinkers. We can’t wait to see what US drinkers think of our spirit. Certainly, we’ll be continuing to work hard at producing new blends and old favourites for years to come.’
Penderyn is a firm which has continued to grow on a global scale, from humble beginnings. The success of the brand continues to reverberate across the industry, with this latest award cementing the distillery team as a force to be reckoned with.
The Penderyn range is set to expand even further in the weeks and months to come, with Portwood leading the charge on a global scale. Recently introduced is the latest themed bottle in the brand’s ‘Icons of Wales’ series. The latest bottle will pay tribute to Welsh legend Rhiannon, a fitting choice in light of the all-woman team who put the distillery on the map.
Penderyn’s latest award success will likely help to push the whisky firm towards further innovations. The distillery will continue to bottle the hugely popular Portwood, as well as Rich Oak and many other well-loved single malts. With the end of 2019 approaching, it will be intriguing to see where 2020 takes Penderyn – and what is in store for its clientele.
‘Wait and see,’ Davies confirms. ‘This latest award win will only inspire us to keep creating new and exciting blends.’
